11th LOWRAD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE - 2012 "The effects of low and very low doses of ionizing radiation on human health and biotopes" Lyon, France PRESENTATION Radiation and radioactivity have been the integral part of society since origin of life. In addition to background radiation, the health consequences of accidental / occupational radiation exposure has been a matter of concern to public as well as to nuclear workers. With increasing applications of radiation/radio-nuclide based diagnosis and therapeutic strategies, living beings are deriving benefit of new techniques and they are faced with at the constant risk of low level radiation exposure. Considering the relevance of radiation effects on environment and human health especially radiation risk assessment and in improvement of cancer radiotherapy, it is imperative to focus for the deeper insight of molecular mechanism of radiation effects on cellular and animal systems. Although radiotherapy is a treatment of choice with curative/palliative intent in the management of various malignancies, but it is associated with radio-resistance, chemo-resistance and unwanted side effects. This needs an urgent intervention of holistic approach, including life style, diet and drug. Several Nutraceuticals have been demonstrated to have radioprotective properties with lower toxicity and side effects, which has also reduced the huge financial burden of the patient. The rationale of application of these agents used as “add-on therapy” or as “complete replacement of existing modern therapy”, needs to be evaluated, based on modern scientific perspectives. The aim of this conference is to present and discuss the latest research results concerning the health effects of exposure of humans and other living organisms to low and very low doses of ionizing radiation. The conference aims to present state-of-the-art scientific research from leading experts in the field and to make the findings accessible to specialists and non-specialists who work with or are otherwise concerned about low dose exposures. Main speakers from academic institutions will present basic scientific results and will be joined by regulators, clinicians and health physicists, whose job it is to interpret the basic science and formulate and implement protection policy for individuals exposed during their work, in their environment or as a result of medical treatments. There is an open call for submitted papers and posters and young scientists and interested non-specialists are especially encouraged to present posters or short talks to the conference. This International Conference is an effort to provide a forum to discuss the frontier research areas in low and high dose radiation biology and to bring resource persons from different fields of radiation sciences and medicine at one platform. Besides, this is first golden opportunity for closer interactions between the leading experts in the emerging areas of radiation sciences. Accurate knowledge about low level radiation exposures is of major importance for the future of medical imaging and environmental radiation protection. It also contributes to the debate about future world energy options. Two pitfalls must be avoided: fuelling unjustified anxiety on doubtful bases or underestimating the risks associated with exposure to ionizing radiation. Only independent and careful research can lead to answers. Only effective communication of this research to stakeholders can make a practical difference. The World Council of Nuclear Workers has a deep interest in radiobiology and radiation protection and in the assessment of the hazards associated with the biological effects of low and very low doses of ionizing radiation because nuclear workers, radiologists and radiation technologists in hospitals. Therefore, we are very much concerned by the controversies which have arisen over the past few years with regard to the dose limit and the LNT assessment of the risks associated with exposure to low and very low doses of radiation.
